MacDermid was founded in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1922 by a Scottish
immigrant named Archie J. MacDermid. Archie sold the company to the
employees in 1959. In the 60's and 70's, MacDermid expanded from its metal
finishing roots into plating on plastics and electronics, and also expanded
globally into Europe and Asia. Beginning in the mid-80’s MacDermid
invested in a number of acquisitions increasing its reach into the current
business segments and expanding into new markets such as graphic arts. In
1938, Harold Leever joined the company and eventually became the visionary
and spiritual leader of the Company - he was here for 60 years!! Both
Archie and Harold believed that people were the company's most important
asset. They had a deep respect and affection for the "family" of workers,
and got to know them, their families, their skills and their dreams. They
left us with a strong legacy of caring about our employees, and a
well-stated Philosophy that outlines many of our core beliefs about our
people, what we expect from them, and what they can expect from us.
